Painting that made me forget about zucchini

Written last night:
Dear Friends,
It’s hot here, but cool in the morning and evening.
Yesterday the police broke up the demonstration in front of the ICE offices across the street. Tonight they’re back, on a smaller, quiet scale, and without the line of tents along the sidewalk.
I just got home from dinner with Mary Kaye and Leigh. We went to Frank Fat’s a few blocks from here. They said it used to be a politicians’ hangout, but they don’t think politicians hang out anywhere anymore.
Earlier today I had fun painting.
Love,
k

Thai takeout just around the corner

Written last night:

Dear Friends,

Zing and I just got back from “Movie Night” with our neighbors. We had some good talk and saw the story of Maya Angelou’s intensely artistic life. Z and I picked up some Thai food first. We waited for takeout at a sidewalk  table because dogs are not invited inside. (Uh-oh! I know what some of you are thinking! Safer outside, Zing!)

This morning we went to Wells-Fargo around the corner. Banks welcome Zing. Is it dog-friendly everywhere and I never noticed?

Love,
k

Vegan surprise

Written last night:

Dear Friends,

Today is the birthday of the Russian writer Pushkin  I’ve always liked his name, but must admit I haven’t read any of his work. I only know it’s his birthday because this morning’s Writer’s Almanac email told me. But I am familiar with Pushkin’s restaurant on Capitol Avenue, not far from me. I’ve been meaning to go there, except that it’s vegan, and I figured the food must be righteous and bland. But to celebrate Pushkin, I decided to go there for lunch today. It was busy and bright and and I loved the arugula omelette. I was wrong. In the right hands vegan is delicious. (There was no sign of a vegan Pushkin birthday cake.)

Love,
k

Can a writer be too tired to write?

Written this morning:

Dear Friends,

I was too tired to write last night… yes, that can happen, especially on a Sunday, which for me is nap day. Okay, I did nap, but I was still too tired.

Patrick and Steph wanted to take me to someplace special for Mother’s Day, so I chose Chicago Fire pizza here in midtown. We had a big booth by the window, which was open to the street, so it was private but we could see action (passers-by and kids playing on the sidewalk) at the same time. Yes, they would have taken me anywhere … but you can’t beat perfect.

Love,
k
